Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. The actress was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school in Boston's poorest tenement area. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. This path was fraught with difficulties. After obtaining a position as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she had a difficult time trying to find work in the stage. The next position she was offered was an "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and moved back to Boston. She made ends meet with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She has also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
